Chapter 6

Riya’s body flared with thrilling warmth, a delicious effect of Sören’s lips on her neck.

But her vulnerable heart warmed too.

Which caused her grave concern.

For her own safety. And for his.

And those risky gooey emotions stopped her from backtracking through the corridor, bursting into the inviting darkness of his room, and tumbling straight into bed with him.

That… and the risk of running into her parents.

“No.” Leaning away from his distracting lips, she stood upright, grabbed his hand, and led him down a limestone pathway through a short granite buffer beside the large estate house. “Exploring… out there.” She gave a nod toward a rolling hill of grass, hemmed in by a perimeter of old-growth trees, that led to countless rows of grapevines half-shrouded in wispy morning mist.

Hand-in-hand, they traipsed across the grass.

But before they reached the edge of the vineyard, feminine laughter tinkled out. Several distinct tones, weaving together. From somewhere beyond the shielding foliage of the trees.

Riya squeezed his hand, halting in her tracks.

He held a silencing finger to his lips.

Unwilling to share him yet, she tugged him forward.

They darted behind the wide trunk of a tree, hugging close to its rough furrowed bark. Its deep morning shadow provided the perfect cover.

She pointed to the next tree in line, released his hand, then raced to the shadow of its trunk. He chased right after her, following the same path.

And so they went, both sneaking by whatever the early risers who’d beat them out there.

“Oh… wait,” he murmured.

Then he stared at the tittering group.

Of young women.

With great intensity.

All four had perfect caramel skin and dark silky hair. Figure-flattering saris draped slender bodies, each swath of fabric a different vibrant color shining in the sunrise, bright jewels of emerald, sapphire, amethyst, and ruby. The youngest girl seemed about nineteen, the oldest closer to Riya’s twenty-five.

A painful flash of jealousy speared through her.

An instant later, hot anger surged.

That Sören got attracted so easily by temptation.

Why the two of them could never be anything more.

A clear reminder from the universe.

“Give me a minute,” he said.

Without even asking.

He strode from their hiding place, before she cut out a reply.

“Sure. You go ahead,” she muttered to the emptiness in his wake.

Then she spun on her heel and left the shelter of the trees. Intent on exploring, on adventuring. Without him. Beyond fine by her.

After sprinting the last yards across open grass, she disappeared behind the shelter of a lush wall of vines. She huffed from the exertion, as much as the burst of anger—at her idiot self, more than him—as she ditched into the vineyard.

Obscuring greenery surrounded her on either side, rows six feet wide and at least as tall, towering a foot over her head.

But in her single-minded focus toward escape, the once-interesting vinery became nothing more than peripheral green blurs as she stormed by. Once within their protection, she slowed her sprint down to a brisk walk. Seeking solace in a thick blanket of mist that hovered in the depths of the vineyard. Becoming one with the expanse of nature, under a clear silvery sky.
